Scene through Wood: A Century of Wood Engraving
25 February – 22 April 2023
Originally scheduled to tour to St Barbe in January 2021 before the pandemic intervened, Scene Through Wood celebrates one of the most skillful and richly creative forms of visual art. This exhibition from the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford marks the 100th anniversary of the Society of Wood Engravers. Wood engraving involves detailed cutting on end-grain hardwood blocks, ink is applied to the upper surface so every cut the engraver makes is a white line on the print. The technique was pioneered in England by Thomas Bewick in the late-18th century.
